Founded in 1924, the University of Trieste was ranked second among the top medium-sized universities in Italy in 2013 considering services, scholarships and benefits, web communication, international outlook, research and industry income. According to the Times Higher Education 2013, the University of Trieste is among the top 400 universities in the world.
The University has a solid tradition in research on transportation systems and planning, with a special excellence at international level in the fields of railway operations, pedestrian and terminal simulation, cable car transport systems and in traffic engineering.
The research group in the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture focuses its research on railway operations modeling and analysis, continuously refining - by means of innovative algorithms – approaches and tools that allow reproducing railway operations with high accuracy. The group gained a significant experience applying the results of research in Italy and in other European Countries’.
In 2011 the research group obtained the award for the best paper of the International Association of Railway Operations Research (IAROR) and it is among the authors of a sort of European manual for researchers and practitioners, the forthcoming book “Railway Timetabling and Operations.
